Hey, I have noticed that my dals are starting to have a little more roaning to their heads. How do I stop this? Any suggetions? Also how do you darken up a red without losing the correct ear/foot color? Thanks! Edona

Hi Edona,
With the roans I will use a self red out of roans, I think the red satins that have a roan back ground have worked the best for me. I still have to watch the heads on the reds because they can get longer but i have the red color right. The satin keeps the color redder to the skin and I really like that. As far as the roaning on those dals it doesn't make a difference on the table if the head is roaned only that the body isn't. I would think maybe the same thing might apply to the Dal's as the red roans use a self black out of Dal's and try not to use to many with roan heads I guess, maybe someone else can tell you if they have had any luck doing something different. I haven't done Dal's but when I first started in the roans and was told it would be ok to mix the two, WRONG< WRONG never put the two together it will come back sooner or later to bite you!. Sherrie

Thanks Sherri! I have noticed my satin reds are such nice reds. I just had a nice red sow, I hope that she stays dark. I have been noticing that my piggies are getting a little longer head and not so "blocky", so I am also working on that issue. What is interesting is that I have gotten a chocolate roan and an golden agouti roan, from my breeedings, in the last two months. Different boars and sows, of course. I have finally gotten a few self black dal sows, so I can start working on the head and spotting. I have really nice one from Chawn, but I needed at least one more that was not from her lines since I have bors from her too. I have been told by many not to cross the dals and the roans. It messes with the spotting BIG TIME. Some how I ended up with a roan with AWSOME belly spots. Too bad he is suppose to be a roan!! Edona

Try to get some Selfs that do NOT have roan in their background, since that is probably where the problem is coming from; that the roan is in the background. Try to find some breeders that have Blacks or Reds that aren't out of Roans (which you'll be able to find, or I can tell you some that I know of) for at least 3 generations.
I'd imagine you'd get terrible roans or dals by crossing them, and plus you'll have a high chance of getting lethals that way also.
