Is September 29th, 2007. Who plans to go? We do! Just wondering... are you normally allowed to have pigs for sale at that show? Haven't been to this one before since in the past 2 years I didn't go on the website or mail in the entry in time, so yea. Lol.

WoooHooo! I get to go to this one!!! It is a very nice show and I love being at the fair. You can have pigs for sale if you have just a small sign with your sale animals on it, or small cage tags or something. They just don't want a big obnoxious sign. I have sold quite a few animals at that show before as pets to the public. Last year I had someone offer me $400 for a particular red white crested boar who took breed! (Terrie Moon can back me up on that claim because she was in on the discussion) LOL Unfortunately, he was my best at the time and I hadn't bred him yet, so I needed his offspring in the worst way. I did get a few pups out of him but I should have sold him because he died a few months ago, before he was two years old. Not sure what he died of.
I just hope I have something to show by then because almost everything I have is in breeding.

Yay, you're going! Wow that person wins the craziest person award! I never would of knew anyone would put in $400 to buy one guinea pig.. Lol... I know WCs aren't common and hard to get show ones... but $400... wow-they must of be desperate for him! The most I'd ever pay to get a pig would be $100... and I mean that'd have to be a registerable Coronet red with the best and deepest red color ever and still a baby in show and not chewed whatsoever. It's a real shame though how horribly hard it is to get a nice show WC. What is the percent that you'll get a showable one in one litter? 20% or less? They are beautiful animals but I personally wouldn't work on a breed where it's pretty rare that you'll get one showable, nonetheless, competitive on the show table. That'd be cool if self crested were showable in U.S! That's the thing that got me out of Americans- how many points color and type are... Lol... I had SAs, Dilute Solids, where you get the Chocolate undercolor fading thing going on, not enough ticking on feet.... and eye circles, muddy belly bands, wide belly bands, etc on the SAs. And color is a good 25-30 points... forget which on Americans. Whereas Abys/Aby Satins are about 10 -15 points I think, Peruvians/Satins are 10 pts, and Coronets, Silkies/Satins are only 5 points. Kudos to you and the other breeders that show and breed WCs out there though! They've got to be the hardest breed ever! Makes me glad that most of the litters... which are longhairs... well most of the pups are showable. I'm as happy as a dog that had her owner come home after a long day, to be working on Roan and Self Coronets! Wait until I add a little Golden Agouti and Golden Solid to the Roans! Oh, yea, and about the two little registerable TSWs I get to show and later use in the breeding program! I personally would have taken the offer. Lol.

Yeah, that lady was pretty crazy alright. She just wanted him for a pet!!! I about fell over. At least I knew for sure he wasn't going to be snake food!!! LOL
About the White Cresteds...It isn't as hard as some would have you believe. In the reds I was getting something like 50-75% showable before I started breeding in Americans to improve type and color. Now I seem to be running more like 20-30% but I believe that will improve once I cross back to cresteds. Blacks are another story entirely. At best I get maybe 10-20%. Golden solids are hard to say because I've only bred them a very few times. I have three showables, all home bred. The last litter I bred a showable GS boar to a showable GS sow and had two beautiful pups but only 1/2 crest on each. Now I'm trying breeding the GSs to reds because the crest gene is so strong in reds....I hope the reds put their little hats on their GS pups!
The thing about WCs is that the points are evenly spread. 20 - type, 20- color and 20 for crest. Now if we can just get the judges to follow that plan instead of automatically awarding to the pig with the best crest, we will be in business! LOL
