Ok heres one more......
What tips can you give a newbie on showing their animals?
My tip would be....go to a show and just watch, listen and talk with other breeders. Do not go hog wild and purchase all kinds of stock! (been there done that! lol! thats why I chose the name Gone Cavy for my caviary, because I basically jumped right in and bought everything lol) pick out only one breed/variety that you would like to work with and then run with it for awhile, you can then see if its something you want to do or if you would like to add another breed to the mix.

It takes some people a while to get up the nerve to get behind the table, but learn how to clerk for the judge - study one of your comment cards to learn where all the comments are placed and notice how the class and variety placements are handled. Watch and listen carefully for awhile to see how the judge communicates with the clerk, and how the clerk manages the papers.
The best way to learn about different varieties and breeds is to stand next to the judge while he or she is making comments on them. Clerks get a bird's eye view of the nuances the judge is looking for. And show secretaries will love you for helping out.
You don't have to do it for a whole day - offer to clerk for a specific breed, or stand in while someone takes a break.

Hi Everyone! I have wrote up a list for new cavy people on what to take to a show that has helped a great deal! But the thing I tell people is read, search the INTERNET, talk, listen and ask alot of questions before you decide on a breed color or sex, so you don't end up with different pigs that you wont be able to take the next step with (breeding), and you will, down the road want to see just one litter at least, then its all over. You are now hooked! Something else I tell people is don't just take one judges opinion take the pig to several shows and see what the over all comments are before you decide to move that one on,I have found that some judges don't like a certain breed or color even though its suppost be be judged fairly, I do think that judges sometimes get influenced by what they do like to breed them self. I really love to go to a show and not be told what that judge breeds or shows and not be able to tell it on the table. After the show then find out they are abby people but the Textel was the one who won because it was the best for that show. Hope this make sense? One thing is for sure is that I have met some of the Nice's people who I call my friends from doing this and it is teaching my children something very important at the some time about life, so its all good whether you show, go only to enjoy or just to get out of the house there is something in doing the cavies for everyone young or old a like.
